Tree Removal

While trees provide beautification, shade, and environmental benefits to the City, there are times when trimming or removal is necessary. See below for guidelines on responsibilities relating to tree maintenance and removal in the City of Bluffton.

Tree Limb Maintenance

  • If tree limbs or branches interfere with any secondary service (wires that run from a utility pole to your house), removal is the property owner's responsibility. Email the Utility Office or call 824-2500 to schedule temporary electric service while removal of the tree or limbs is performed.
  • If trees or limbs have fallen directly into the City right-of-way, or have fallen on power lines and are interfering with primary voltage lines (wires that run from pole to pole), the City will arrange for their removal. Email the Utility Office or call 824-2500 to report trees in power lines.

Tree Removal Process

Dead or unsound trees in the City right-of-way will be removed by a tree removal contractor, selected by City bid process. However, the property owner is responsible for 50% of the bid price and a service fee of $30 payable to Bluffton Utilities upon acceptance of the bid. To determine if a tree qualifies for removal:

  • Property owner must complete the Tree Removal Application form below.
  • Inspection appointments will be made to determine if the tree qualifies for the removal program.
  • Trees that qualify for removal by the City will be placed on the "Tree Removal List" and removed in order.
  • Property owners, whether keeping the wood or not, have the responsibility to clean up the area and remove the tree stump.
